SHAWN WELLING is the chief director of Planet Funk™ which he founded 15 years ago. Shawn started his career by performing & choreographing for the NBA World Championship games for the Houston Rockets in 1994 and continued with NFL & NHL half-time shows, concert openings, stage productions, music videos, over 60 television appearances plus conducting dance master classes throughout the United States.

Performance highlights include Cirque du Soleil (Dralion) in which Shawn and his company were hired by Cirque to perform their Elements of earth show, and Good Morning America, which Diane Sawyer heralded Planet Funk as legendary. Shawn has co-hosted 2 ABC dance specials (one submitted for an Emmy) with Debra Duncan, and a NBC TV special with radio and TV personality Sam Malone. In 2000, Welling built Planet Funk Academy. The instructional and performing arts studio aired on the Bravo network in a 5 week series that was also highlighted on The Oprah Winfrey Show to a 5 million viewing audience. Shawn has produced a variety of successful master classes for the Disney Lion King dancers, the cast for the Broadway hit “Oliver”, and the well-known MTV stars, Wade Robson, Brian Freidman and Dave Scott. Shawn has choreographed and performed in the Downtown Theater District for over a decade: 7 Hobby Center shows, 5 at Jones Hall and 5 at the Wortham Theater.

Shawn began the concept for AXI as a Broadway show in 1999 which first starred Wade Robson. It was also the first concert show for the prodigy dancer Phillip “Pacman” Cbeeb and rising dance stars Di Moon Zang and Jordan “Sifu” Koler. ELC (Electric Light Circus) is in its 15th installment and has been seen as far as the Middle East and in over 60 cities worldwide.

Shawn Welling’s latest endeavor is film production. Shawn directed his first film, “House of Dreams”, and won a gold award at the WorldFest International Film Festival and also its highest honor, the platinum, as director for best docu-drama full feature film. In 2009, he finished his second film “The Messenger”, which has been released in Landmark, AMC, and Angelika theaters to sold out crowds multiple times. “The Messenger” was voted best local feature film of 2009 by Houston Press.

Mr. Welling currently premiered his third feature film based on a true story entitled “Project Aether.” This Sci-Fi/Suspense/Thriller movie earned numerous awards with its first showing at WorldFest International Film Festival, including Houston Film Critic’s Society ‘Best Actress’ (Joy Willard) and Houston Film Critic’s Society ‘Best World Premiere’ (Project Aether). Currently, Welling is working on his latest project “AXI (Avengers of Extreme Illusions)”.
